Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2015, Jasmin Thomas has found ways of regulating her symptoms through diet, CBD and a well balanced lifestyle. Through her CBD infused skincare range Ohana, Jasmin hopes to pass on her knowledge of functional CBD products, which use plant-based active ingredients that are both sustainable and effective. We asked Jasmine to tell us more about this super ingredient, how we can incorporate it into our daily lives and why it's such a big deal in skincare.

1
First of all, for the uninitiated, what is CBD oil?

“CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the Cannabid sativa plant, which is also known as marijuana or hemp, according to the US National Library of Medicine.

It’s a naturally occurring substance that’s used in products like oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm. Unlike its cousin, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the major active ingredient in marijuana, CBD is not psychoactive. *Health.com.”

What are the main benefits of CBD?

“Anecdotal evidence tells us CBD is good for a plethora of health concerns from anxiety to Alzheimers to MS. Clinically proven and available now, it has shown great results in drug resistant forms of infancy epilepsy as well as adult epilepsy.

As more and more research occurs, there are literally thousands of studies on CBD that point to its efficacy on its own.

THC free CBD oil is also considered a natural holistic alternative treatment for many other conditions such as depression, anxiety, insomnia and paid which is actually how I first discovered it.”

3
Why should I use CBD in my skincare routine?

“CBD is anti-inflammatory which makes it a great skin care active. We have receptors in our skin ready and waiting to interact with CBD which gives us all the good anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits we look for in skin care to promote healthy and rejuvenated skin.

CBD is actually a stronger antioxidant than both vitamin C & E making it a super ingredient. Studied so far also shows CBD helps regulate sebaceous glands reducing acne and helping to limit potential outbreaks. “

How has CBD helped you with your MS?

“CBD has been an important part of my journey healing my MS holistically. I have made several lifestyle changes through exercise, diet and of course the introduction of CBD which helps me keep inflammation at bay, reduces muscle pain and spasms when used internally and externally and of course helps with anxiety, which is sometimes a common side effect of having an unpredictable auto-immune condition.

Through learning and growing in this industry, I have witnessed first-hand how many it has helped to manage a range of different health concerns. It is not a one size fits all cure everything but, it is an excellent option that should be explored, and better education provided to our health care practitioners.”

What do you see as the future of CBD in skincare and healthcare?
  • Further education of CBD in skin care
  • More research and development in the healthcare industry specifically with doctors and GP’s given the demand
  • CBD is a bigger supplements category than vitamin D & C combined so it is here to stay
  • As we move through time and stereotypes change and people form more accepting opinions, I think there will be a bridge between allopathic (science based) and plant-based medicines.
